Sustainable Futures and the U.S. Industrial Chemical Programs under TSCA
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency launched Sustainable Futures (SF) to promote the incorporation of pollution prevention principles into chemical stewardship. Through SF, EPA provides training on the use of OPPT predictive tools and provides incentives to new chemical submitters who use the tools to prescreen chemicals for hazards and risks. In this workshop stakeholders can learn how to conduct screening level assessments using free, publicly available predictive modeling software and satisfy the first requirement towards SF graduation. These tools are the same models and methods used in the EPA Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) to conduct screening level risk assessments when hazard and exposure data are lacking. Use of the tools can provide insight to stakeholders on the potential regulatory outcomes and areas of concern for EPA. This workshop will integrate formal presentations on the development of the tools along with hands-on sessions to formulate assessments during the workshop with sample chemicals.
